About Focus on the Leader

Focus on the Leader exists to help Christian leaders become more effective in their leadership roles, particularly in the church, although our materials have broader application. Our main tool with which we can equip you is the Character Based Leadership Inventory. By responding to 181 statements, you can receive a personalized report filled with insights concerning how your temperament background, personal development and spiritual growth will affect your approach to leadership. This assessment takes approximately thirty-five minutes. Your personalized leadership report, approximately 8 to 15 pages in length, will be generated immediately.

Focus on the Leader is offered by Character-Based Living, LLC. The name "Focus on the Leader" has a two-fold meaning. The first is for leaders to focus on God's leadership in their individual lives and not just learning and using leadership strategies and techniques. The second is to emphasize that the first focus of leadership training needs to begin with the leader's character rather than strategy or methodology. Our mission is to provide Christian leaders with a foundation for the increased awareness of God, themselves and their values through personal assessments and individualized training so that they might optimize their efforts as they strive to fulfill their God-given leadership responsibilities.

Focus on the Leader uses assessment and training to help leaders begin to develop a strategy for life-long development of their character as a basis for their leadership efforts. The assessment comprises five components:

Three components help leaders understand themselves:

  • Effect of your personality on leadership.

  • Influence of your past on leadership.

  • Influence of present life circumstances on leadership.

And two components help leaders align with the character and spirit of God in their self-leadership:

  • Assessing your character development based upon 26 terms that appear in the Greek text of I Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

  • Leading by the Spirit: The role of the fruit of the Spirit in leadership.

The first step that we recommend in leadership training is the completion of the Character-Based Leadership Inventory. This instrument takes about Thirty-five minutes to complete and will provide you with approximately 8 to 15 pages of assessment.

It is our belief that one of the most important variables in the leadership “equation” is the one you have the most influence and control over—your own character.
